The Spin presents: Monsterosa @ Tap Social, Botley, Oxford - Wednesday 9th July, Doors 7.30pm
Doors: 7.30pm
Performance from 8.30pm
We bring to you for the first time, a great new outfit based in Scotland: Monsterosa. The lineup features 5 players – that all have diverse careers in the jazz world – that have come together to create this quirky, original music which the London Jazz News described thus:
“The band are terrific: the whole ensemble play with a deftness and sensitivity… a joy to listen to”
The band is fronted by vocalist Rebecca Hollweg. Following performances at Glastonbury Festival and the London Jazz Festival, Jamie Cullum said of her:
“A great singer who I love very much…a great, great album…a great listen from start to finish”.
The music is composed by bandleader and saxophonist, Graeme Wilson. Graeme’s work is hugely varied, ranging from commissions from the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra to lecturing and writing on the psychology of music (with works published by the Oxford University Press). In a review for Graeme’s album ‘Shoes for Losers’, Jazzwise had this to say:
“punchy, intense and demanding intricacies... the whole session is a love letter to daring spontaneity”
Andy Hamill is one of the UK’s most in-demand bass players. His deep musicianship has led him to work with, among many others, Laura Mvula, Eska, Annie Lennox, Nitin Sawhney, Carleen Anderson, Tim Minchin, Mark Murphy, Kylie Minogue, Anita Wardell…and so on and so on!
Also massively in demand is drummer Tom Gordon. Tom continues to hold the drum chair in The BBC Big Band and has worked with such A-list artists as Al Jarreau, Joe Sample, Jamie Cullum, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, Eliane Elias, Sammy Nestico, Patti Austin, John Dankworth, Cleo Laine, and Jon Faddis.
The band is completed for this gig with The Spin’s own Pete Oxley on guitar (of whom you probably know enough about…and if not, check out his website: www.peteoxley.com)
Folks, we trust that although this may be an unknown entity to you, that you will trust our record of only booking fabulous, stimulating and happening outfits at The Spin; this band, with their programme of joyful fare, will be no exception! Over the last 20+ years, The Spin has presented live music of the highest calibre within the broad 'contemporary jazz' genre, creating scintillating nights out for anybody with a taste for interesting, exciting, alluring and luscious music.
At The Spin, we believe that our events should be accessible to all, as well as affordable. This, in part, is only made possible with the help of our team of generous volunteers, who volunteer not only their time but also their expertise towards making our gigs the success that they are.
Every musician who plays at The Spin gets properly paid - and it is through your ticket purchases alone that we can do that. Our events are run on a tight budget to keep ticket prices down; we realise that not everyone can afford or may be willing to pay for higher ticket prices. However, for those of you who are happy to pay a little more and contribute further to the efforts of The Spin, we are giving you the opportunity to ’support the club' by making a voluntary contribution on top of your ticket price. These donations will be greatly appreciated and will help us to continue putting on our fantastic live jazz events.
