Thursday 24th June 2021

For our first gig before a live audience, post all of the lockdowns, we present two of the most interesting, formidable, accessible and totally engaging musicians the UK has ever produced!

But before proceeding with a little more detail about our artists, here’s an explanation about why we are using the Holywell for this gig: As venues are opening for live events, we know that you would prefer to come and hear live concerts, socialise with your friends and be a part of the general bonhomie of our club. To that end, we are planning a ‘jazz injection’ series of gigs around Oxford and its environs - until the Old Fire Station is fully ready to house us in the theatre space. The idea is to take The Spin to all and any sort of venue, ‘dress’ the room appropriately for sound and looks - and to book artists that will suit the given venue. We might use the Norrington Room in Blackwell’s; a factory room; a concert hall; a disused boat house; a gin distillery etc.. (And on this note, we will welcome any suggestions for interesting venues!).

So, to the 24th June:

We are truly delighted to be presenting Huw Warren and Iain Ballamy at the Holywell Music Room! We had been trying to get these masters long before lockdown, but due to their respective hectic commitments, were never able to secure a date! In very brief, these guys have an enormously varied CV - which illustrates the breadth of styles that their music encompasses (and that you can expect to hear at our concert). Why wouldn’t you want to come out and hear an evening of scintillating fare, performed by guys whose history includes collaborations with:

Carla Bley, John Cage, Kenny Wheeler, June Tabor,Gil Evans, Loose Tubes, Bill Bruford, Joanna MacGregor, Billy Bragg, Elvis Costello, Perfect Houseplants…to name just a few.
