Theo Travis' Double Talk

Wednesday 31st July 2024

One of the hardest working, most successful (and brilliant) saxophonists in the country revisits The Spin: the amazing Theo Travis with his band, ‘Double Talk’.

Equally acclaimed in straight-ahead jazz settings, progressive rock bands and experimental ambient music, Theo Travis has an international reputation as one of the brightest stars on the contemporary jazz scene” (Amazon).

His many musical interests come together in this distinctive project. Described on BBC Radio 2 as “One of the very best young tenor saxophonists of this or any other jazz generation in Britain”, he has appeared on over 175 albums and played at Ronnie Scott’s in London over 70 times. A long time member and co-leader of the classic jazz rock band Soft Machine, Theo Travis has also worked with Robert Fripp, David Gilmour, David Sylvian, Steven Wilson, John Etheridge, Gong and Keith Tippett amongst others. He has performed all over the world including the USA, Canada, Japan, Europe, Scandinavia and the UK. Theo has released 2 albums with Double Talk, both critically and popularly acclaimed.

The band features Theo’s emotional tenor and soprano saxes and flute, the soulful hammond organ playing of Pete Whittaker, the explosive guitar solos of Mike Outram and the powerhouse drumming of Nic France. This will be an evening of passionate music and haunting instrumental songs from one of Britain’s top saxophonists and his band.

“Travis’ ambient and jazz leanings unite on this wonderfully trippy record featuring the leader’s saxes and flutes, Mike Outram on space –rock guitar and Pete Whittaker’s haunting Hammond. With Robert Fripp guesting, a groovy track called  Portobello 67 and a rather beautiful cover of See Emily Play, this is a rare, fine English psychadelic jazz.”   MOJO ★★★★
