‘Julian Nicholas is a saxophonist of not only great technical prowess but also delicacy of expression and intensity of feeling.......he has exciting and expressive qualities alongside a faultless technique’  - The Times

‘ the strikingly warm tenor of Nicholas - a mysteriously underrated figure whose profile should be similar to that of, say, Julian Argüelles or Iain Ballamy’ - Chris Parker - Vortex Reviews

Julian came to prominence on the British jazz scene when he joined Loose Tubes, one of the most influential bands of the last 30 years on the European jazz scene – musicians such as Django Bates, Tim Whitehead and Julian Arguelles all emerging from the group. In Julian’s varied career since his time with Loose Tubes, he has worked in jazz with the likes of Jimmy Witherspoon, Bobby Wellins,  Harry 'Sweets' Edison, Chris McGregor's 'Brotherhood of Breath, Dudu Pukwana, London Jazz Composers' Orchestra. Beyond his work on the jazz scene, he has appeared with the likes of Osibisa, Toyah Wilcox, Hazel O’Connor, and  Belle And Sebastian. Recently he has been working with Lianne Carroll and appears on a recent album; his own group ‘Heavy Plant Crossing’ includes players such as Chris Batchelor and John Parricelli.
