Trish Clowes’ ‘My Iris’
Wednesday 25th May 2022
The Spin is delighted to present something of a contemporary jazz supergroup in Trish’s ‘My Iris’.
The line up is:
Trish Clowes ~ saxophone
Ross Stanley ~ keyboards
Chris Montague ~ guitar
James Maddren ~ drums.
Let’s begin with what others in the know have said about this band:
“a rich mix of cinematic landscape evocation, funky guitar grooves, dreamy reveries spun off minimalist patterns and fluently uncliched improv” ~ The Guardian
“an incredible band” ~ Jamie Cullum, BBC R2
“a beguilingly inventive mix of shadow and luminosity… lyrical warmth tempered by certain shady spookiness” ~ The Scotsman
Trish’s star has been ever rising since her graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in 2006. Since then, she has earned all sorts of awards and commissions; these include being made a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist (2012-14) and commissions to write for the London Sinfonietta and BBC R3. With her band, My Iris, Trish has performed in all sorts of prestigious venues, such as Ronnie Scott’s, The Barbican, The Royal Festival Hall, The Wigmore Hall and the Toronto jazz Festival.
And her band members are no slouches either! Ross Stanley is generally acknowledged as the most awesome Hammond player in the UK (surely, anybody that came to the Spin gig with Ross and Paul Booth will attest to this!); Chris Montague has long been at the cutting edge of happening jazz - and has been heard at pre-Covid Spin gigs with his thoroughly inventive group, ’Troika’; James Maddren has played with most of the leading contemporary players on the UK (and international) jazz scene. These include Jacob Collier, Gwilym Simcock and Stan Sultzman.
