The Spin Jazz Club, Oxford
Time Is Of The Essence
The Spin welcomes back to the club the band that re-opened activities on the 29th July this year, Time Is Of The Essence.
The band has amassed a huge pad of repertoire over the years, so they are promising to perform an entirely different programme to that heard at their last two Oxford appearances.
Damon Brown w/ The Spin Band
Having self-exiled himself to South Korea some years ago, it is now a rare treat to find ace trumpeter Damon Brown back on our island; the Spin is delighted to have secured this date with one of the club’s all-time favourite musicians. Damon is one of those trumpeters whose totally fluid improvising is always imbued with references to the blues.
Bossa Nouveau
Bossa Nouveau is - to coin a cliché - 'what it says on the tin’! The band intends to bring both the cool and the heat of classic and contemporary South-American fare to you for this performance. So, expect to hear pieces from A.C. Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Sergio Mendez, Durval Ferriera along with material by the likes of Chick Corea and Pat Metheny.
Tim Whitehead w/ The Spin Band
Tim is one of those players for whom paragraph after paragraph of superlatives could be written. The Spin’s Pete Oxley has often described him as “one of my favourite saxophonists on this - or any other - planet!”, due to his playing which encompasses lyricism, muscularity and a sense of the blues throughout.
Jim Hunt w/ The Spin Band
We have a killer gig lined up for you this week at the Jam Factory, featuring the extraordinary tenor saxophonist, Jim Hunt! Jim has been furiously busy (aside from - for some reason - over the last 18 months!) performing and recording all over the world, pretty much consistently for years.
Martin Shaw w/ The Spin Band
The Spin welcomes one of the leading trumpeters in the UK to perform at TOAD this coming Thursday. Martin Shaw has wooed and wowed Spin audiences in past years and we expect no less of a response at this gig!
Julian Nicholas w/ The Spin Trio
Julian has been a Spin favourite for many a year, purveying his uniquely lyrical and mesmerising playing on tenor, soprano saxes and bass clarinet.
The Liam Dunachie Quartet
We are thrilled to present this outstanding keyboard player in his own quartet setting, featuring a stella line up of players.
The Brew-Up!
'The Brew-Up’ is a five-piece band purveying scintillating, groovesome and melodic fare, delivered by five seriously happening players who share a love of this music.
The Last Outdoors Summer Gig with Time Is Of The Essence
Featuring the outstanding saxophonist Ollie Weston, the band performs original pieces ("finely honed, instantly appealing and right up there with any contemporary jazz writing…” ~ The Guardian) and fiesty fare by the likes of Steely Dan, John Scofield and Stevie Wonder.
Dave O’Higgins w/ The Spin Trio
Anybody that is sax player, and anybody that is a fan of great sax players will know about Dave O’Higgins - for all the right reasons: Dave has quite rightly been acknowledged as one of the greatest exponents in the UK (and beyond) of this instrument for several decades!
Steve Waterman w/ The Spin Trio
We are delighted to welcome back the club’s most popular (and equally brilliant) trumpeter, Steve Waterman. It’s hard to know where to start in summarising Steve’s career, given the vast body of first-class work achieved.
John Etheridge & Pete Oxley
John and Pete have worked together in various settings outside of The Spin over the decades that they have been working together and their performances are never without a gingerfizz effervescence - particularly given the spontaneity of the duo setting!
Time Is Of The Essence
The Spin is delighted to be putting on the first full band ‘jazz injector’ gig at The Oxford Artisan Distillery with the groove-meisters, Time Is Of The Essence. Featuring the outstanding saxophonist Ollie Weston.
Huw Warren & Iain Ballamy
We are truly delighted to be presenting Huw Warren and Iain Ballamy at the Holywell Music Room! We had been trying to get these masters long before lockdown, but due to their respective hectic commitments, were never able to secure a date! In very brief, these guys have an enormously varied CV’s.
The Oxley - Meier Guitar Project
We present the Oxley - Meier Guitar Project, a band of five virtuosi musicians. Led by two guitarists with 40 critically acclaimed CDs of original music to their names, this gig will feature their scintillating compositions, taking the listener on an aural journey - via their soundscapes - from Turkey to Brazil.
Alex Hutton Band
"A great British talent and a wonderfully natural pianist" ~ Ronnie Scott
Thus spake he, who without a doubt had heard all of the finest jazz pianists - in his own sitting room, so to speak! But we at Spin inc. agree: Alex really has his own thing happening and it always is music of great charm and excitement that he brings to the club.
Art Themen
Art has had the most extraordinary dual career: for decades, he was a leading orthopaedic surgeon by day, whilst at night, he was performing at Ronnie Scott's with the house band, led by Stan Tracey.
Art began his gigging life with such blues heros as Jack Bruce (of Cream etc.), Alexis Korner and Dick Heckstall-Smith before becoming a much in-demand jazzer in his own right, accompanying such American 'greats' as Nat Adderly and George Coleman.
Mark Armstrong
“pirouetting through Gillespie’s breaks quicker than a hummingbird’s wings”
The above quote from The Times (Alyn Shipton) sums up the fluidity of Mark's playing and we are delighted to have a return visit from this exceptional trumpeter who cut his teeth with the likes of Stan Tracey and Mike Garrick.
Julian Nicholas
" Julian Nicholas is a saxophonist of not only great technical prowess but also delicacy of expression and intensity of feeling. He has exciting and expressive qualities alongside a faultless technique" - The Times
The above quote sums up why Julian has been called to record, tour, write and arrange with a huge array of the jazz gliteratti, including Carleen Anderson, Bobby Wellins, Loose Tubes, Dudu Pukwana, Stan Tracey, Curious Paradise and Claire Martin, among many, many others.
